Malcolm Knowles advocated a role whereby the teacher draws the learner
into a commitment to learn by responding to the learner's needs, and
involves the learner in directing the content and process. The
relationship between teacher and student is interdependent and
co-evolving.

Yes, andragogy has the potential to play an important role in distance
learning. However, I have found that students need to be coached in the
principles of the approach so they understand the teacher's
expectations. Most students have been trained to rely on their teachers
for leadership. Some need to be shown how to take responsibility for
their own learning and become self-directing.

It seems to be a matter of discipline. For example, when students are
experiencing their first distance learning course, it often happens that
they don't submit homework assignments on time and have to be reminded.
They're accustomed to being motivated by the negative consequences of
showing up for class and not having met the requirements. When there is
no actual class meeting, the negative consequences disappear. By the
time they're into the second distance learning class, however, they have
internalized the motivation and late submissions are no longer a
problem.
