I hope I didn't get the impression that using student learning as the
criteria for success is a one-off, end of process approach. I find the
unshakable belief that computers can help students learn clouds the
evaluation question. My view is people help other people learn, often using
a range of technologies. There already are some proven strategies that let
us evaluate this process, which I think need to be the starting point for
any evaluation system.
Many of the evaluation protocols I see follow a medical model: if we can
get the treatment right, it will be administered and the students will be
inoculated against ignorance. The University teachers I work with know that
teaching is not like that. Evaluation of the student's learning is on-going
and situation dependant and starts with evaluating the goals and assessment
of that learning even before the question of technology arises.
If this is the reality of good teaching, then I can see no alternative but
to transfer the same good teaching practice to on-line learning as well.
