Hi, this is my (nervous) first time contribution to the List. Firstly, I
want to say what a great idea it is to send a digest of discussions by
email. Excellent.

I've just started a new project, part of which involves, and I quote from
the project spec. "drawing up a functional specification for various
teaching & learning methods, such as dissertation supervision and
seminars, and map these activities onto the functionality of various
software packages including: First Class, Top Class, Learning Space and
BSCW".

I take this to mean a 'bottom-up' approach to Instruction using technology
(IUT) and reminds me of Systems Analysis methods.

Firstly, Is anyone aware of current or recent research in this area?
Secondly, and frankly, do you think this is a useful or valid way of going
about linking what actually goes on during a dissertation session, for
example, or is there a more fruitful approach?

I suppose it comes down to how flexible commercial packages are in
handling online teaching and learning.
