I'm not much of a Greek expert, since my Greek is limited to Biblical Koine
texts. But I'll take a shot at it unless Tasos has time for a more complete
explanation. As he mentioned, ANDROS refers to male, or man and gunaika or
gynaika (depending on your transliteration rules) refers to woman or female.
Ao andro-gyn would be a little like American slang "she-male," and refer to
some male-female amalgamation.
The term GENOS refers to type, nature, or genre. So Androgen is
male-related, and those creating scientific names drew from the Greek
sources correctly. You can usually assume that a difference between gen and
gyn will suggest a significant difference in the original Greek vocabulary.
