ARE YOU AN ARTIST , DESIGNER OR WORKING IN A RELATED FIELD?
IF SO YOU MAY BE INTERESTD IN A NEW WEB BASED MASTERS COURSE USING NETWORKED DISTANCE LEARNING.
RESEARCH MASTERS in ART and DESIGN:
a new course from the Virtual Campus of The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, UK
hosted by Gray's School of Art, Faculty of Design
The new Research Masters in Art and Design is a unique 2 year part-time networked distance learning course
providing appropriate research strategies which are explored through a personal research project. The
course is primarily aimed at practitioners working in visual contexts for example, designers, artists,
curators, arts administrators and educators, who wish to develop and enhance their professional potential.
What are the aims of the course?
o to help you develop research strategies appropriate to your professional working context
o to provide you with relevant research methods experience
o to provide you with new career opportunities (for example preparation for further research to Ph.D,
research supervision and research management, extending practice through the use of new media technologies)
What does the course comprise?
The course is structured using the metaphor of a 'journey'. It is divided into six distance learning
modules (each worth 30 Masters level credits), which are related to stages in the research process:
o developing an appropriate research question - Planning the Journey
o putting your project into context - Mapping the Terrain
o planning and structuring your project - Locating Your Position
o using appropriate research methodologies and methods - Crossing the Terrain
o evaluating, analysing, and interpreting your ideas - Interpreting the Map
o synthesising and communicating your project - Recounting the Journey
The distance learning materials are applied to the personal research project, which forms a major component
of the course. Delivery is principally through interactive networked distance learning via the University's
Virtual Campus and the course's own web site. These provide a collaborative learning environment using new
media, providing a forum for sharing ideas and debating key issues. The course duration is 90 weeks,
starting in August each year. The course has three one week residential events: an Induction Week, a Summer
School and a final Examination Week, held in the 2nd
week each August, at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, Scotland.
What kind of learning support is available?
The University's Centre for Open and Distance Learning provides you with help and advice on how to be a
successful on-line learner. The Virtual Campus offers free modules to prepare you for networked distance
learning. You will be supported in your studies by an experienced practice-based research supervisor. In
addition you will have access to a range of specialist advisors as appropriate. You will also be part of a
student study group. As an M.Res. student you will have access to on-line databases though the Virtual
Campus. You may also call on support from other University services such as the University's Libraries.
How will the course enhance professional development?
On completion of the course you will receive the award of a Research Masters Degree (M.Res.) in Art and
Design
The main outcome of the M.Res. course is professional career development based on an understanding and
application of research methods, enabling you to apply research strategies to all aspects of visual
practice - designing, making, facilitating and disseminating. The qualification provides initial training
for Ph.D. level research in Art and Design. The course provides potential future research supervisors and
managers with an insight into the research process.
What qualifications and/or experience are required to do the course?
You should have a first degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience. You will be expected to
demonstrate evidence of a high standard of professional practice, commitment, motivation, and independence.
You should have your own personal computer with CD drive and access to the Internet. Where appropriate
access to relevant professional facilities for example studio, workshop or office is desirable.
How much does it cost?
As this is the first year of the new course the fees have been discounted. For the full course, including
residential weeks, the fees have been set at #4420 payable in instalments.
