Why must instruction be constructivist or behavioralist? Why must we make a
decision between behavioral and cognitive process?

Most courses involve a hierarcy of learning objectives beginning with fact
learning and culminating in some form of problem solving. A sound course
strategy would take advantage of the efficiencies of the behavioralist
approach when teaching facts and rules. It would also apply discovery
learning, constructivism, and cognitive processing to teach the application
learning objectives.

It seems to me that there is a time and place for each strategy and their
associated methodologies. Time spent extolling the virtues of one strategy
over another is missing the point. All have value when applied to the
appropriate objectives.
