Mark,
Have you seen Walter Dick's article on Instruction and Constructivism? I
found it valuable. I tend toward the behaviorist pole, and I realize the
value of the context of learning. Dick's article is fairly balanced, and
the spirit of one of his closing remarks has stuck with me for years:
"What about the constructivist interventions? Do they have specific
learning objectives for each student? Apparently not. Is the organization
of content as well as practice and feedback activities focused on specific
outcomes? Apparently not. Are criterion-referenced assessments provided
for each learner to determine if they have mastered the desired skills?
Apparently not. Therefore, if instructional designers design instruction,
then constructivists are constructing something else. This 'something else'
may be a desirable educational intervention, but is does not appear to be
instruction." (p.44)

Dick's article is a response to other articles which you will find in the
same issue of Educational Technology.
Let me know if you find his point of view useful.
