If I read Philip's position, learing is the responsbility of the
idividual because, in the end, that is how the individual survives. That
person may learn by sitting on a mountain top or as part of a larger
community, but in the end, the individual lives or dies by its knowledge
and wits.
Rick and others seem to be saying that communities can learn together.
So that, over the long term, it is the community which survives, at
least for a period until a new arrangement is created. Thus, the skills
may be distributed across the community and not lodged in an individual
or group of individuals who have the same body of knowedge. Rick and
others have pointed out that this model has some history in Asian
cultures and in particular, japan.
>From a western perspective, the latter seems to reflect the ideal of a
learning organization and yet seems to pose the greatest threat to the
individual. There is a legitimate fear here based on cultural history of
the west
Learning organizations and communities, in the corporate world seem to
be an answer to building a world where this fear can be dissapated. I
think we need to understand what the risk and rewards are and then to
figure out how to build models to meet the needs
