Have you ever thought of having the students do their share in the
construction of the website?

We maintain an internet café in a socially disadvantaged part of the
city prone to racial violence, with the regular visitors being mostly
between 11 and 18 years of age.

We provide a website with all kinds of content about that part of Berlin
and a large space for the kids to pursue their own projects, expressing
themselves on their homepages, engaging in chats, joining their
abilities to participate in small contests etc.

This has been a great source of satisfaction for those who chose to
participate (although there are of course tensions within groups) and
many more look at the pages and find their own feelings, or feelings not
very different from their own, expressed.

Of course, we moderate our chats to prevent flames and racist or other
insults, but mostly it turns out the group regulates itself.

Also, I don't think that only "very happy, joyous, consoling,
comforting, thoughtful, innovative, healthy, contemplative times" (as
Dennis Nelson wrote) should be represented. If what you show is too far
from what your audience experience in daily life there is no chance
they'll ever accept it as their own. Show a direction but don't neglect
reality!

Best regards, and any new ideas are appreciated!
