To claim that information design and instructional design are identical is to
mis-use language in such a fashion as to render further discussion quite
literally meaningless. These are two very different functions, though both
are important. It may well be, of course, that for a Constructivist who is
disposed philosophically to be opposed to the very act of instruction of
students, instructional design can be viewed as totally inappropriate. He or
she might hold the position that there can be no such thing as
constructivistic instructional design, preferring instead to present
information to prospective learners (whatever that means; are effective
information environments designed or are they not?). Most so-called
educational Web sites these days, in any case, are neither informationally
nor instructionally designed, and many Web-design packages seem proud of the
fact that they are , or at least claim to be, pedagogically neutral.
