HIGHLY INTERACTIVE PHYSICS DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES
Alfred Bork University of California, Irvine

MAY 13, 1999
I am suggesting a cooperative effort with the University of California.
Two background factors set the stage.
1. The University of California is starting a distance learning
preparatory school, a systemwide effort of all nine campuses from the
office of the President.
2. There is a new program within the United States Department
of Education called Learning Anytime Anywhere Partnerships. Our
preliminary proposal was just approved, and the final proposals are due
in a month. Partners are required.
We have a draft of a final proposal, developing five physics courses at
the high school and college level. These courses would be highly interactive,
with the level of interaction resembling the conversation between a student
and a skilled tutor. English would be used for interaction. Long term
student records would be kept and frequently used within the programs,
allowing a more individualized and adaptive response.
Materials would be usable in homes, schools, universities, libraries, and
shopping centers. Problem solving, intuition, and creativity will be
stressed. The programs will search for student problems, and offer
detailed help. The courses will allow very large numbers of students.
We have been developing such software for 30 years at Irvine, now
in cooperation with the University of Geneva in Switzerland. A
production system, including extensive software support, is available.
Implications for this type of learning extend far beyond the current
project. Little such software exists, so this project could be a model
for important future development.
I would be happy to supply additional information.
