I have only occasionally dropped into this discussion, since as working
playwright, novelist, and occasional university lecturer, I've heard the
theme and variations all too often. However, there is a peculiar twist when
we discuss the issue of standard English on the world stage of the internet
listserv or chat room.
For those who seriously believe that "the way we present ourselves in
writing provides clues about the sort of person [we are]", what do you
deduce about those who have a mother tongue other than the apparently
universal eEnglish? Does anyone actually believe that only those fully
literate at all times in standard English are entitled to communicate their
thoughts on this world wide technology?
