Regarding the listserv grammar :
Having read what has been said so far, and in merely offering another
opinion, I would like to say that I feel closer to the recent post by Jamie
Love. While I don't think perfection is required, taking one's time to
re-read what you are about to have others view just make good sense. Having
the few minutes it takes to do so, I just want to double-check what I've
written. No, I am not an grammar fanatic. I just want the message to make
my point without the distractions of simple spelling errors.
On-the-other-hand...
In a Chat room, where the speed of a comment is crucial in order to keep up,
I could tolerate more errors. There, and not in a listserv, is where the
element of time competes with spontaneous, synchronous expression, thereby
making one more prone to typographical mistakes. For that reason, I can be
less concerned about how something is written. Even with that said, it
still distracts from the message.
