The answer is "YES". It is a well known issue in sociolinguistics that one
changes register depending on the context. A good source is the work of
Labov http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~labov/home.html.

In my native language there is a major difference between oral and formal
wrtining. In informal writing one pitches at some point in the spectrum
between the two. Only BBC Wales newsreaders seem to talk that way they do!.

I am not sure erudition has much to do with spelling or accurate typing.
One is a function of a human action in lexicography at some point in
history (with strong geographic variation) and the other was a function of
office practice classes which were denied to me at school because I was
good enough to do Physics.
