In response to Martin's defense of his slef, perhaps we need to look at the
way our new medium is changing our discourse communities for future
generations. Although spelling, syntax and grammatical errors are rampant,
and although responses tend to be rather shallow (when compared to a 10 page
reasoned response sent a week later), the purpose of "chat" groups,
listservs and the like differ from our existing paradigms.
I suspect there were a group of elder statesmen debating the value versus
the harm that would be caused by the introduction of that "new-fangled"
machine with letters.
Guttenburg's invention has arguably been the most significant event in the
dissemination of knowledge that mankind has ever known. As pages were
strewn about to the mini-literate population, no doubt intellectuals thought
that the end of the literary and philisophical world as the knew it was
about to dissolve.
Here we are centuries later and we still communicate, albeit with different
focuses.
Come-on now; don't tell me that a single slef in lieu of self changes the
writer's meaning or the reader's understanding.
If we want our ideas published in refereed journals than that's where our
comments should be, not posted on listervs.
