Some additional thoughts on this most interesting thread.

1.) I hope no one will hesitate to contribute because they fear making
typos/spelling (or as one writer said, "smelling") errors.

2.) CMC refers to Computer Mediated Communication (I think).

3.) The level of formality or difference in media is not the issue. Yes,
e-mail and list serves are informal. However, there are some among us --
myself included -- who are chronologically enhanced and continue to
believe Ms Snodgrass, our 3rd grade teacher, was correct: sloppy writing
and speaking reflects sloppy thinking.

4.) I agree with the posts that argued typos and spelling errors hinder
communication.

5.) My spell checker seems to think the correct spelling is "proofread."
