Sloppy writing in e-mail must have the effect of spilling over into all other
forms of written communication. The idea that one can be witless in
grammatical and spelling usage when communicating via e-mail and then,
suddenly, become a master literary craftsperson when engaged in other forms
of writing is just plain silly. Carelessness breeds further carelessness.
Even if one assumes, for the sake of argument, that e-mail is a form of
spoken language and not writing (an interesting concept, surely), why should
we permit or even encourage people to be sloppy, disorganized, illogical
speakers?
