Greetings, Steve et al.

I think the point is well taken. I know I make enough of my own mistakes,
including the typo in the last message. We have to live with human
fallibility. I also think that most people with a lot of e-mail experience
do know that this medium can be informal, or formal, depending on the
context.

I noted that Ruddy is on the faculty of the University of Laval, so I assume
he speaks and writes French. For those who haven't experienced French
grammar, it can be more demanding than English, and many native French
speakers with high school or college-level degrees are reluctant to write
anything without handing it over to at least one human proofreader. It would
take about one paragraph to show a careful reader about how well a writer
has mastered the language and understands his own message.

By comparison, English speakers and writers can make themselves understood
despite multiple errors. That's wonderful in its own way. However, in
face-to-face communication, tone, gestures, and body language can make up
for errors, or even transmit concepts without words. In e-mail since we have
none of the other dimensions of communication, all the weight of the message
is invested in the words we use. We just need to bear that in mind. I think
people will bear with the errors, and ask for communication when necessary.

Best wishes

Marc
