I think the amount of precision required depends on the context of the
communication. Bear in mind also that once a message is transmitted to the
Internet, it might be read by people from many different cultural and
linguistic backgrounds. When the author is writing from the perspective of a
cultural group I know, I handle the errors accordingly. It gets more
complicated when the person's author's language is not English. Also, for
non-native speakers, it's harder to figure out what the author meant.

In one instance, a lady wrote that a child wanted to be an artist "like her
ant." Any American could figure out what was intended, except possibly those
with a peculiar philosophical perspective on the artistry of ant trails and
tunnels. But, to do so, you would have to know that "aunt" has two
pronunciations, one of which is a homonym of a certain arthropod.

So if we stay as close as possible to the language of the dictionary and
grammar manual, we give our readers a fighting chance of figuring out what
we mean.
