I'm with Wendy Lowe on this one - I think email is a form of communication which is half way between written and spoken language. I find email typing oddities quite amusing - as long as I can understand the text. As a text editor I spend a great deal of time editing poor grammar and smelling and believe in more formal written communication these aspects are very important. However, there is a time and a place for everything.
Given that most of us are suffering from information overload - and email is one way of keeping up with developments in our field or the movements of our families - it fulfils the role of being quicker than a letter but more flexible than the phone.
Perhaps Ruddy might like to consider the philosophy that the purpose of language is to convey meaning and as long as that is done adequately then perhaps - in some cases - spelling and grammar are not that important?
