It is the case that the OU UK uses audio on occasions - these days this
tends to be in the form of audio cassettes rather than live radio
broadcasts.
Reasons, as with most OU 'materials', relate to a combination of pedagogical
and pragmatic considerations:
Pedagogical revolve around what audio does well (or better than other
alternative media) in relation to the intended outcomes. This might include
(but not be limited to):
* provide authentic voices e.g. real people talking about their experiences;
a famous person/'expert' talking about something.
* motivate/enthuse (a transcript looses tone/emphasis).
* where sound is important eg pronounciation in language learning; listening
to music.
Pragmatic might include (but not be limited to):
* cost - audio is much cheaper than video
* access - most of our students have access to cassette player
* flexibility (which might be a subset of access) - eg our students tell us
they like audio cassettes cos they can listen to them when they are stuck in
a traffic jam or on a long journey
* variety - spice of life? (maybe this is part of pedagogy too in terms of
helping maintain concentration/interest?)
