Picking up on Mary and Joanne's comments, more on radio as a resource than
a means of dissemination, we have been using radio as a participative
learning tool for a while now.
My organisation is an adult English language teaching one of mainly
migrant and refugee students. We have developed a partnership with the
local ethnic community radio station - who trained our student volunteers
in radio presentation (ethics etc) and then the volunteers worked to
develop a 30-minute fortnightly magazine-style program, interviewing
community members, teachers, musicians etc. As well as the obvious
language learning benefits for the students involved, the program is used
by a number of teachers as a source of English language input for
classes.
To be realistic, it's a relatively small number of learners directly
involved, and resource intensive to begin with- but has all sorts of
possibilities for learner engagement and participation.
