I do agree Mary that radio can help to build a robust social system where
other deliveries can evolve and there is a very good example of this in
Zambia where the EDC is providing an educational radio service in the
absence of formal schools -
http://main.edc.org/newsroom/features/zambia.asp

" Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) in Developing Countries

For the past three decades, EDC's Center for Multichannel Learning (MCL) has
pioneered the use of radio to bring curriculum and teacher training to
classrooms in some of the world's least-developed countries. Throughout
Africa and South America, radio has been a tremendous resource for learning
and dissemination.

Recognizing radio's potential as an untapped learning channel, EDC staff
members began developing radio-based curriculum and teacher training
materials. The radio lessons use stories, songs, physical activities, and
role plays that encourage and model interactive exchanges between teachers
and students.

Take an EDC Content Tour on IRI in developing countries."

However, there is also considerable use of radio as an educational tool by
the BBC World service (you can learn English by radio)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/radio/index.shtml

and Radio Australia has an education service with university level
programmes as part of its lifelong learning focus - at
http://www.abc.net.au/ra/learn/default.htm

I think the point you make about the mobility of radio is a really important
one Ramesh
