Hello Mary,
Your points are well taken, and highlight why I added my little disclaimer. My point
is that in situations where the assumptions I made are in fact true, why should we
consider radio as a potential medium for education? Where the assumptions are not
true, there is indeed a strong case for radio.
Somewhat provocatively I would like to suggest that the decision to use a medium such
as radio is generally more of an accessibility issue than an effectiveness one? Surely
much also depends on the nature of what you are trying to 'educate' people about, for
example should we make a distinction between using radio for public health notices and
using it to explain Newtonian physics?
I like your closing challenges:
"Perhaps some of the crucial questions are, what are the intended outcomes of
using radio as an educational medium, and what educational strategies is it
most suited to? Do these change as the social infrastructure of a region
develops?"
These are certainly the relevant questions, and I suspect that the answer to your
latter one is 'yes'!
