In response to Deirdre, who is obviously very experienced in this field, I
would be curious to know why she feels that online courses give students
less direct access to the teacher and other students. I find on the
contrary that in my courses, students have far more access to each other
[which is good], and to the teacher [which can become an overwhelming
burden, and needs good course structure to keep it within reasonable
limits].

These are issues that always figure most on my training course for
educators, and are the most motivating discussion points!

Of course it depends on how you do it. I use videod lectures, which the
students say gives them the "feeling" of closeness to the teachers, as well
as structured discussions in FirstClass, done in such a way that students
have roles in the discussion without the need for too much time-consuming
moderation by the teacher. Thus I have 100s of students on the Certificate
in ONline Education & Training, but not an impossible amount of tutor
involvement. It seems to work :-))
