I think that Geoffrey Cain hit the nail on the head when he said that
facilitators should make clear their expectations and the purpose of the
discussion.
When I checked at http://ifets.massey.ac.nz/review_forms/member_list.php
there are currently 2273 members of this list. What would happen to this
discussion if all decided to post? Many unsubscribes I think.
We have a lot to learn about what sort of discussions we can expect under
different circumstances. As a facilitator, I have experienced the initial
pleasure at an active interesting thread only to be followed by the feeling
of dread to see 20 new postings on a busy day when I have lost of other
things to do. Online discussions have their limitations (fewer social cues,
etc.) but their lack of limits of time and space can lead to a voluminous
discussion that places burdens on tutor (particularly if they assess) and
student participators.
