Whilst I would agree with Ania Lian on the importance of not requiring
participation for participation's sake (unless that is what we are
measuring), as an online student and an online community developer, I would
like to add, that in many circumstances online participation/interaction can
produce unexpected beneficial results, therefore IMO having value in itself.
The two main constraints I see are 1. Lack of time for participants to
justify participation unless clear objectives are set 2. Participants' lack
of familiarity with online communications and communities. The first will be
tough to remedy from a course developer's or a tutor's point of view, but
the second can be helped.
