hi;
Ania Lian stated that;

"I think there needs to be some clarity made regarding the role of
technology, classroom meetings, lectures and "on-line participation". Why
force anyone to do anything if the activity seems a waste of time? I think
we may need to more clear in regards to the objectives of our teaching so
that we do not assess on-line participation (unless it is the participation
that we are looking for) but, in fact, the attainment of the objectives that
we seek out."

yes, why do we force anyone to do anything if the activity seems waste of
time... i am strongly supporting this idea. in my online and hybrid/blended
courses, i am after "online participation" because i want to evalute what is
happening in my course/lecture. in my opinion, giving a course online
doesn't mean to place lecture notes on the web pages and leave your students
alone. i beleive that being online instructor/lecturer is not easy and
requires different skills. after passing 3 years i had experiences "online
classroom menagement" which is not directly similar to that of traditional
classroom", "i have noticed that to become an "Online Instructor", i should
have new competencies to menage Online Classrooms". As an Instructional
designer/programmer (i have developed all of my courses by myself is like my
traditional classroom teaching environment, as a traditional instructor i
have never entered to my lectures using somebodyelse's lecture notes). i
have applied instructivist and constructivist teaching/learning strategies
together and used Internet for only communication and collaboration. for
constructivist part i have applied pbl online by giving group projects. for
following what is happening during this process i have arranged group chat
and forum rooms to each group. i have kept records of each room (online
participation). during the term, i have answered forum messages and
conducted regular CHAT SESSIONs for answering/discussing student questions.
i have recorded all of chat sessions and published their logs on the course
site. by this way, anytime/anywhere who is taking this courses can easily
reached the logs..
i have noticed that, using chat and forum in a predefined task , increasing
student/student, student/instructor interaction i.e. 56 student have posted
1513 messages to the forum which means that each student has asked nearly 3
questions in each regular classroom lectures. but regularly, afew student
(most of the time they are the same, a huge number of students stays and
watches them) asks at most 3-4 questions during the regular classrooms
settings.
as a result, i am after "online participation" and using it i am evaluating
student performances in my courses..
thanks
