A question inherent in our topic is what do we hope to achieve, to measure
by the on-line participation?
Some possibilities include:
1. A willingness of participants to risk exposing their communication,
analytical, extrapolation and discernment abilities, among others.
2. The actual effectiveness and / or efficiency of the participants
abilities aforementioned.
3. The reaction of others to the participants' varying abilities.
4. Instilling in participants the responsibility to keep the other
participants informed of their positions to help maintain trust and harmony
in the group perception of equal risks and rewards.
5. Our appearing to others that we know what we are doing and are
successful because all of our "participants" are "actively participating."
etc.
Some of the five require more or less time and effort to measure with some
overlap of requirements for each. A synchronization matrix might help
establish and compare those requirements.
An inherent factor is the situational maturity of the rest of the
participants. For example, in some mature groups, the participant
appreciated by others in the group is on topic, moves the issue forward,
owns personal views, comments and feelings, and is respectful of others.
That individual most often speaks only when discernment indicates the
comments and timing is right. In some groups, mature offerings are less
appreciated as the group prefers not to fact up to the difficulties of
identifying and moving the current situation forward.
