Hi Michael and Angelique
The discussion about participation is a really interesting one from a point
of view unrelated to formal assesment. I work with art students online
using a format of image plus text. My observation of students who
participate actively online is that they accrue a whole new body of
expertise on top of the given learning task. (Quite out of proportion to the
initial task) - their active online learning experience in itself spawning
new directions, and fresh pathways - in fact, changing the way they
creatively think and act. (or paint!)
The art students who participate passively do not seem to experience this.
I was really interested to read Michael Neubauer's earlier suggestion and
paper,at
http://www.irrodl.org/content/v3.2/1ns.html because in there, he and Mia
Lobel & Randy Swedburg deal with this issue of involvement and participation
and in their introduction, talk about the idea that one's sense of identity
is derived from the way one interacts with other people.
Does anyone have any further suggestions for reading in this area?
Liz
