I read all of your responses with great interest since I am involved in distance learning and learning via online (a subset of distance learning). I am also interested in the reward system that is offered by your institutions in online learning. As a distance learner online, I find the feedback to my discussion to be a good reward. Another reward is when students interact with passion, personal bias, and challenge to a posted discussion question. These discussions are lively, active, challenging, and thought-provoking.
Interestingly, each course room has its own dynamics. I have taken a course where there is a high level of activity (as described above). Another, people get on, post their discussion and, a few days later, respond to others (fulfilling class requirements) and then move on. The discussions are thorough and thought-provoking, but there is little room for the high level of activity.
Adult learners multitask. They have: 8 - 5 jobs (sometimes 8 - 11pm); family commitments; civic volunteerism; home responsibilities; and education. Of course, occasional emergencies arise, vying for personal attention.
