Response to Michael on distance education involvement. I agree with you, although, like you, I do not have data confirming my experience. I think one reason why you see more active involvement in online classes is that the learners are usually at home participating.
In the world, we have many mechanisms that we use to protect ourselves: we are not open books for the world to read. At home, we let down our guards, we are in a safe and secure environment, people cannot invade our space at will, and we are in our comfort zone. Being online, therefore, affords the learner to be more forthright with answers and responses. They cannot see facial expressions or body language that would belie the written word, and we can dismiss or accept whatever is discussed. I discovered more about people's personality, personal lives, and beliefs and values in one online course than I had in all of my brick and mortar college classes combined.
