Digest - 4 Jun 2003 to 5 Jun 2003 (#2003-37)
Dear Michael
With regard to the discussion on on-line participation, I agree with you
on your points that on-line activity of all kinds should be rewarded and
that the reward for activity is out of all proportion with the level of
activity.
You are right when you are talking about on-line learning as an activity,
a didactical means in a non-line study. Out of a lecturers point of view
you are right when you are talking about an on-line assessment in an
otherwise ‘campus driven’ study.
Based on my experience as an on-line student for three years I proffer
the view that:
There HAS to be a difference in students attitude when learning online as
part of a otherwise campus driven study and a strictly on-line study.
Students who wants to learn on-line, in an independent and interdependent
relationship with other students in action based learning, need to invest
in that on-line study.
This means of investment is called participation. Or class activities.
You mention that not all students in the "real" world participate
actively in class activities.
On-line students cant take fellow students to the pub or meet them
coincidently in the street to talk by the way-ish about study related
subjects. As an online student you have to do that in fora a like
discussion groups and chat because there is no conventional forum.
Maintenance of your learning environment would be another appropriate
word for it.
There is no "real" world for strictly on-line students.
Regards,
Angélique
