With regard to the discussion on on-line participation, as a
university lecturer I have incorporated on-line participation
in my subjects for the past five years and proffer the view,
based on that experience, that:
a) On-line activity of all kinds should be rewarded (I
typically use just 5% of the total mark).
b) The reward for activity is out of all proportion with the
level of activity.
c) There is no purpose in attempting to differentiate between
active and passive participation, there is often only a
decimal point difference.
d) Not all students in the "real" world participate actively
in class activities.
d) No empirical data to support the view, but my experience
is that students contribute more in online fora (discussion
groups and chat) than they would in a conventional forum.
On the latter, I believe that this could be attributed to
students' genuine desire to be helpful to their peers.
