I am currently undertaking research into effects of assessing online
discussion but my own practice suggests that rewarding participation with
even a few marks does encourage participation way beyond the students'
"return on investment". I agree with Peter that listening is participation.
The grade criteria I use for assessing online discussion includes such
participation.
Please mail me off list if you'd like an evaluation copy of these grade
criteria.
