hi;

Michael Verhaart says in a 5-27-03 post:
It is often quoted in papers of on-line learning that "Students do not
use/contribute to on-line systems unless there is an assessment component".
Does anyone know of * research that has been done in this area? Or *
research into what factors encourage students to participate.

i am giving both online(fully distant from Turkey to Cyprus) and blended
(WEB supported Traditional)courses and using the following grading policy;

Attendance 5%
Chat/Forum/e-mail/Final Project 35% (Online Performance + Project)
Homework 20%
Midterm 15%
Final 25%

i am keeping online chat, forum and site usage logs and publish on the site.
at the beginning of the term, most of the time my students are suffering
from this grading policy but eventualy i am having positive/suppotive
messages..
this term, in the blended course 52 students have posted 1415 messages (they
have completed final projects and will have final exam). in the fully
distance course 48 members have posted 987 messages (they are still working
on the final projects.
i am using this grading policy nearly 3 (6 terms) years. each term, the site
usage was around 12 hours/student (any click recorded in a database), 30-40
forum messages/student. in each course, students prepared a web project as a
term project (real life problems) and during the project development phase
a group forum and chat room was assigned to each group and their group
performances followed from these rooms' logs.
personally, i can say that this grading policy forces students to use online
communication and collaboration tools even they resist at the beginning..
