Some work has been done in this area at the Open University (UK). Check out
the Knowledge Network generally (http://kn.open.ac.uk/public) - searching
for assessment will bring up over 100 documents most of which are about CMC
and assessment and many of which are 'research based', or look at
http://kn.open.ac.uk/public/document.cfm?documentid=1268 which looks at the
issue of student participation and assessment in the context of a
'constructivist' (if you must) distance education course.

Not with standing my comments in the paper referred to above (the
documentid=1268 url) I agree with Dave Bremer when he said:
Those of us who are merely listening are indeed participants in a
discussion.

PPS Actually, like "many" lurkers I post quite a lot of emails to individual
