Peter's post made me think about the following quotes.

"How do I know what I think until I hear what I say?" from W H Auden.

"If students are to learn desired outcomes in a reasonably effective manner, then the teacher's fundamental task is to get students to engage in learning activities that are likely to result in their achieving those outcomes . . . It is helpful to remember that what the student does is actually more important in determining what is learned than what the teacher does." from Thomas J Shuell

I would take both of to mean that active participation on the part of the student and an honest attempt on their part to express their understanding will assist in their learning. I am currently not involved in distance education but I am conscious that in the classroom, it is more likely that those who will not speak are also not doing and not learning.
