I am an interloper - just coming in on Dave Bremer's latest post.
I have 'strongly encouraged' participation while teaching my distance education
degree courses. I accept that there were some people out there who were engaged
and listening and thinking ..... But there were also others who were not. By
'strongly encouraging' (i.e.rewarding) some contribution early on, I am sure that
I was able to have some of those quiet ones realise that just by contributing,
they had to become engaged and really think - and then, that it was enjoyable.
This is based on my beliefs that to learn well, the learner has become involved
and also rewarding a behaviour (participation) will help ensure that behaviour is
displayed.
The teacher is not just a provider of information. A teacher uses all sorts of
carrots and sticks to encourage all the learners to become involved. Participation
in a listserv is one way being and keeping involved. I have another belief too:
That much work in industry is done by a participating group and thus skills in
participating are a valuable addition to technical skills. The job advertisements
say "... must be a team player." We need to encourage that.
