David Bremer brings up a good point as does Gaye Kelly, and Muhammad Betz
certainly describes what we know of students: attach a grade to something
quantifiable, and it will be done.

What we discovered in the LBD eClassroom was that, similar to F2F, there are
listeners and participators. (That should not be a surprise, it was just
that we could measure it.) We said about the listeners, they were
"attending".

In the synchronous LBD eClassroom there is a button that must be clicked on,
the "Get/Send" button, to get data and to send data. During an eClass
session of three hours with twenty-four participants we could then collect
the number of times a student "participated" (posted a message), and the
number of times a student requested data from the server to read what was
being sent by participants, "attending". We took the ratio,
attending:participating, and found that some students had high ratios, some
medium, and some low ratios, and that this characteristic remained
reasonably consistent throughout the semester for each student. (These
ratios are graphed in Figure 4 of the IRRODL article,

The conclusions one might draw from this data is that there is a similar
ratio in F2F but it is very difficult to quantify, and the same is true for
a listserv.
