Michael Verhaart says in a 5-27-03 post:
It is often quoted in papers of on-line learning that "Students do not
use/contribute to on-line systems unless there is an assessment component".
Does anyone know of * research that has been done in this area? Or *
research into what factors encourage students to participate.
I do not know of research on the topic, but I have been trained at a large
online university to require student participation in online discussions by
stipulating the number of days a week that each student must post
substantial messages, ranging from 100-300 words. Each student's
contributions are then totaled at week's end and a "Participation" grade
assigned for that week. Both platforms that I use, Outlook Express
newsgroups and Blackboard, can be easily configured to review and count
student contributions.
