CALL FOR PAPERS - JOURNAL OF INTERACTIVE LEARNING RESEARCH (JILR)

SPECIAL ISSUE ON COMPUTATIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN WEB-BASED EDUCATION

Guest Editors: A.V. Vasilakos, V. Devedzic, Kinshuk, W. Pedrycz

* Important deadlines

Submission: 1 Sept 2003
Acceptance decision: 30 Oct 2003
Final paper due: 31 Dec 2003
Publication date: 2nd quarter 2004

* Scope

Web-based education has become a very important branch of educational technology.
It offers classroom independence and platform independence, both personalized and
collaborative learning opportunities, adaptivity in presentation of the learning
material and in providing navigation support, and use of advanced technologies
(such as intelligent agents and virtual reality) to improve the effectiveness of
the learning process. A number of authoring tools are already available for
developing Web-based courseware, using the advantage of cheap and efficient storage
and distribution of course material, hyperlinks to suggested readings, digital
libraries, and other sources of references relevant for the course. As a result,
thousands of Web-based courses and other educational applications have been made
available on the Web in recent years.

Computational Intelligence (Soft Computing) being viewed as a vital synergy between
fuzzy sets, neural networks and evolutionary optimization can play a primordial role
in the development of these educational and technological challenges. Some recent
applications have pointed out the potential of Computational Intelligence in the area
of intelligent Web-based education.

The goal of this special issue of JILR is to discuss recent developments in this rapidly
progressing and technologically attractive area that has an important social impact,
identify the most visible trends and study current and emerging applications. This
special issue will help survey the existing methodologies and provide the reader with a
fully updated state-of-the-art view of the research pursuits related to intelligent
Web-based education.

For the scope of the journal, format of the submission, and the reviewing procedure,
refer to the current guidelines of the journal at: http://www.aace.org/pubs/autguide.htm

The authors are encouraged to submit original papers dealing with theoretical,
methodological and applied aspects of intelligent Web-based education. Suggested topic
areas include, but are not limited to, the following: Web-based intelligent tutoring
systems, computational intelligence in adaptive educational hypermedia, computational
intelligence in the communication of knowledge, computational intelligence in learning
and authoring tools, student modelling in Web-based education, teaching strategies for
Web-based education, intelligent pedagogical agents, ontological engineering of Web-based
educational systems, Semantic Web and education, adaptive courseware generation, software
engineering of intelligent Web-based educational systems, Web-based life-long learning,
standardization issues, and evaluation of intelligent Web-based teaching and learning
systems. We especially encourage papers related to applying soft-computing approaches and
techniques to intelligent Web-based education. The submission should be done electronically
