I have to wonder if when building developers first started using electric
tools if they had discussions about e-construction principles. I think far
too often we focus on the new shiny tools in our tool box instead of the
fundamental skills we have as educators. I know it happened when video
became readily available and I see the same issues being discussed again
here.
What we often overlook is that learning occurs, not when we have an
experience, but when we reflect on that experience and apply change or
reinforce future behavior and decisions. Learning occurs any given moment
of any day, much as Stephen Downes describes in Discussion 521 around
learning social skills. Our job as educators is to structure experiences
and encourage reflection on those experiences, whether we use a hand saw or
a power saw. It does make sense to use tools that closely resemble life
outside the learning environment. Also, there are clearly places where one
tool allows you to experience things better or safer than others, such as
learning to recover from an engine failure in a simulator versus in a real
airplane. Other than that, the principles behind developing people remain
the same and should be selected based on the desired behavioral outcome and
within the constraints of the learning environment and financial resources.
