Hi, Derek

Perhaps we are focussing on too narrow a definition of 'interaction'? One of the
things we have observed within the Learning Design Group at The Open Polytechnic
where I work is a tendency, when we start talking about computer-based learning,
for people to use the term "interactivity" as if it means the same as "multimedia
element". Granted, Mark's examples are broader than this, but perhaps we should
consider that any stimulus that triggers a response constitutes an interaction.

Thus, an instruction to the effect of
"When you have completed this activity, contact your tutor / post your answer /
discuss with the person in the next desk"...
...or a posting such as yours that prompts others to reply on a listserv or
discussion board...
...or a reading that prompts me to scribble notes in the margin...
are all effective means of promoting interactivity in a learning environment.

In a constructivist framework, I suppose it could be taken to include any element
of the learning environment that causes a student to adjust their perceptions?

In other words, interaction may not have to be defined by a physical action on the
part of the student?

The question marks are my shorthand for "does this fly?"

[Q: is an "interaction" different from a "transaction" in this context?]

Interested in your comments (or anyone's).

Mary
