Derek, I agreee entirely.
One of the things I would dearly love to see developed more thoughtfully is the
discussion board facility we use. The protocols for using these sspecify things
like: don't post just for a "me, too" response. Yet students who use the boards
(and I am one of them) consistently say that when they don't get a response to a
posting they are likely to feel isolated, and as if they have 'got it wrong'.
Wouldn't it be grand to sit down with some of the developers / providers of these
packages and talk through the implications of these protocols and assumptions for
students, and what features might ameliorate them.
In the Blackboard environment we use, for example, a simple voting facility that
would allow a 'hear, hear' response without cluttering up the board would be so useful.
Likewise, there are real limitations to how much genuinely collaborative group
space / functionality there is in our system. Students can work individually and
post to a common space, but possibilities for them to work asynchronously in a
shared space or on a shared file are really limited when you come to try and do it.
Of course, these suggestions always seem to come down to "show us the money, and
we'll show you the development" but, Oh! for the opporunity to make it happen!
Cheers
Mary
