One more use for the much maligned multiple choice tests:

To enable frequent continuous assessment of large numbers of students as an
incentive to improve workrates.

I did some research on this a number of years ago and found that using
"quick and dirty" MC tests on a weekly basis did seem to have an impact on
students' attendance, attention and general study. They also seemed quite
accepting of the fact that the general innacuracy of individual tests would
be statistically evened out over a longer period of time. I would describe
this as a simple crude technique (more stick than carrott) that seemed to
work
