Ray Francis said in regard to older people's ability to learn that his parents example helps to make the case: "My experiences with my parents (a 71 year old "cybergeek" (Mom) and a 75 year old "I can do it faster on paper" (Dad)) confirm most of
"the NODE's" findings." Actually, I believe that this reflects more on the DESIRE of older people to learn new things, which is not the same as the ABILITY to learn. As older people develop hardening of the arteries, many of them develop "hardening of the categories." The two are probably correlated, though not necessarily so. Ray did not have to single out his parents. Think of all the middle-aged people who continue to teach in their old stereotypical ways. Yet, many of the innovators in educationala technology, for example, are middle aged or older.

So what is the point? Motivation is central to learning. We all know that, but too often we forget.
