Too often I hear people talking about what age is doing to them.
If we work out, mentally or physically: we will lapse, maintain or expand
in the capabilities that we work on. This is true for running, pushups,
memorizing, observing. learning, speaking, playing, instrument, and so
on. With age, our recovery periods when we tax ourselves may be
longer. Our endurance may be somewhat shorter. But whatever we
practice properly we will improve upon (all things being equal and absent
prior physical, chemical, mental or emotional damage: all of which also
may be overcome to degrees).
Absent our workouts, the strain of recovering or traversing new ground
as we age is tougher than prior workouts would have made the road for
us. But the truth remains: if we resume (or begin) our workouts,
physical or otherwise, learning or otherwise, we will improve. Age may
be a factor, but not a dibilitating factor.
