I'm charged with review of our school's charter standard's statements in
light of the 21st Century and the upsurge in computer mediated
communication (CMC) for courses. The look is at the organizational pattern
of the statements.
Often there is an educational need in the community and an agency issues a
charter to start a school. In that case, the charter would start with the
mission statement. Mission statements have received a lot of work in
business in the past decade. From the mission statement would flow the
character of the statements about the school concerning students, faculty,
instruction, etc.
In light of 21st Century thinking and CMC, perhaps the charter standards
should start with the delivery method and organize statements about the
character of the school from that. CMC determines the faculty, the student,
the instruction, and the facility with all its impact on the budget.
Modern institutional thinking is learner centered. Yeh, right. (^_^)
Perhaps a charter should start with the student and then explain the
character of the school based on the student's we have or want today.
Students would be why we have the faculty we do or the courses we do.
Perhaps we should focus on the content area as our charter of who we are.
What we teach determines who we are. Perhaps the strength of the faculty is
who we are. Its not what you know, its who you know. Perhaps the
certificates, degrees, and/or job related issues should state who we are to
determine the rest of our character.
Keeping in mind that this is about distance education, CMC, 21st Century
marketing, virtual university competition, and the character of the
students in that environment, what are the pros and cons of your thinking?
I plan on compiling a list for the Board to have for decision making. It
would be made available online. Completed statements would of course be
posted on the Internet.
