Dear IFETS Members,

I would like to start another thread for some useful discussions
amongst educators and teachers here, who are using internet for teaching
purposes.

Obviously, the Internet can and should be a pivotal tool for meeting and
teaching these specific technology standards. There is no substitute for
learning by doing. On-line projects and activities can also teach students
to use some of the basic programs any business will require - word
processing, data-base and spreadsheet, for example.

If your students are using the Internet as a research tool, the information
they gather will easily drop into a word-processing document with simple
cut and paste methods. So will pictures from the Web. Be sure that they
know how to do this. Review with them the citation rules and copyright
principles they need to give credit where credit is due.

After you've been using the Internet for awhile, you'll want to start
creating your own material. Simple Web pages created by the class to show
off their work inspire creative content and also teach the basics of HTML.
Don't worry about creating an award-winning site - make a site that is
going to interest YOUR kids. Just load the information and see if your
students get more sophisticated as they learn the tricks of the program.
You will find that they become their own worst critics -- proof-reading
skills improve and creativity flourishes as well as self-imposed demands to
increase their programming abilities. It's great to watch.

If you want to go one step further, and teach specific HTML programming
(http://www.hwg.org) skills in-depth, the Internet is a virtual gold mine
of "how-to" information on computer and Internet programming. Use a search
engine to start, and then follow the maze of recommended Web sites!

thoughts ??

Kindest Regards
Arun Tripathi
